FROM THE DESK OF THE TOWN SUPERVISOR

The saga of the “Fire of 2008” is almost at its end.  Construction is due to start any day on the Highway Department’s new equipment barn.  Meanwhile the annual spring brush pick up is underway; the east side of the Town is almost finished with the remainder of the Town to be completed within three weeks.
Even though we are still waiting on a major part for our new excavator, brush pick up has taken place almost on time thanks to the Town of Pittsford exchanging a loader with our Highway Department.
In other Highway Department news, mulch is available for pick up at the garage on Semmel Road.

On behalf of town residents I would like to thank Bud Ripley, who retired recently, for his work as Dog Control Officer.  And I welcome our new Officer, Joel Taylor, to the job.  Speaking of retirement, I would also like to thank Moe Bickweat for his most recent contribution to Mendon, his tenure as Deputy Supervisor ends June 1st.  One of the first tasks a new supervisor has is to appoint a Deputy.  Moe graciously offered to serve, briefly, as Deputy Supervisor giving me some time to make a decision.  I believe government should be a team effort, therefore I have decided to have each member of my team serve as Deputy Supervisor.  Following an appointment schedule each board member will serve for five months in the following order: Roy Cluff, John Rooney, Shari Stottler, Mark Cottle.

The Steering Committee for the Library Project met April 22nd and May 12th (meetings are held the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month at 7:00pm in the Town Hall).  All three subcommittees (Communications, Development and Facility) have met at least once in the last month.  Two goals are being pursued simultaneously, the work needed to apply for a library construction grant by August 22nd and the longer range planning needed to complete the entire project.  Laurie Guenther, Library Director, and Shari Stottler, Town Board member, recently attended training for the Library Construction Grant application.  The Town’s engineer is conducting a feasibility study on the library parcel, specifically in regard to building placement options and stormwater drainage issues. One option being explored would include the museum and records storage in the new facility.  To that end we have enlisted the help of the Genesee Finger Lakes Regional Planning Council, to conduct a grant search related to museums, records storage and, of course, libraries.  Two consultants have presented proposals for a capital campaign and the Steering Committee should have a recommendation, regarding the campaign, for the Town Board’s next meeting.  Without question, a successful capital campaign will have a significant impact on the scope and finances of this project.

Great Bend Nature Park continues to be a priority.  Two trails have been laid out within the park, one of which requires some clearing.  To accomplish this two work days have been scheduled: Saturday, May 31st from 9:00am to noon and Saturday, June 7th (which also happens to be National Trails Day) from 9:00am to 11:00am. Please join us and see our newest park, I am sure you will find it a spectacular place to visit.  For more information and parking locations please visit townofmendon.org.  Semmel Road Park will also see improvements this year; restrooms and two athletic fields will be installed by October.

The Parks Advisory Committee will meet again Thursday, June 19th at 7:00pm in the Town Hall.  This meeting will kick off long range planning for more athletic fields and a trail network for Mendon. Members of the Planning Board, Environmental Conservation Board and Blaze soccer will participate.

Please consider serving on a committee for the Library Project (this may be a once in a lifetime chance to help with a project that will serve for generations to come) or host a neighborhood coffee; offer your time and talent for the benefit of Mendon, just give me a call at 624-6061 or email me

And finally, please note the following changes: after Memorial Day the Town Hall switches to summer hours and will be open from 8:00am to 4:00pm Monday through Friday, the Town Board meetings in June will be held on the 2nd and 16th, in July and August the Town Board has one meeting per month on the second Monday.
